Montreal, Q.C.: Islamic Relief Canada is packing and giving 80 backpacks full of school supplies to vulnerable elementary school students in Montreal for the first time.

Backpacks will include items such as exercise books, scissors, markers, pencils, colouring books and calculators, as well as PPE items such as face masks and hand sanitizer.

“Due to the pandemic, many children have been unable to go to school in person, while at the same time their parents have been struggling financially. We want to help ease their burden by providing these school essentials, and also bring a smile to children’s faces as they return to school in September,” says Sanam Islam, communications manager at Islamic Relief Canada.

  • Media members in Montreal are invited to cover the assembly of up to 80 backpacks by Islamic Relief staff and volunteers on Friday, August 20 from 2 pm to 5 pm at Montreal Mini-Storage (5260 Ferrier St.) An Islamic Relief spokesperson will be available for interviews.

The Islamic Relief Montreal team has partnered with Iqra Foundation/Al-Salam Mosque to distribute the backpacks to families in need on the weekend.

Now in its second year, Islamic Relief Canada’s national Back to School initiative has grown from two cities last year to nine cities this year. The charity will be distributing more than 1,200 backpacks to students from vulnerable households, including low-income, racialized and newcomer families.

Please confirm your attendance to the assembly event by contacting [email protected] or Sanam Islam, communications manager, at 437-970-5656.
